Description German gunstock - wooden - "Taken from captured German in WWI 4" long, 1 5/8" at widest point, metal attachment(lever) wood worn on one side(thumb?)

Provenance This artefact is a wooden gunstock. It belongs to a German made Maschinengewehr 08, or more commonly referred to as a MG 08 machine gun. The MG 08 saw service from 1908 all the way into the 1960's. This heavy duty machinegun required a four man crew to operate it and was capable of firing 500-600 rounds per minute.
This particular gunstock was taken from a captured German soldier during the First World War. The wooden handle has a thumb shaped indent worn away on the left hand side, indicating that it saw heavy use.
