Description |
Two-handed Adze with a black and rusted head, a light brown wooden handle and dark brwon leather guard on the blade of the adze (A: Head & guard. B: handle). Dimensions: Head length (towards blade) 25cm, width of blade 15cm. Handle height 76.9cm, top of handle length 3.9cm, width 4cm. According to 'Wood, Tools and Skills', this adze is made of steel. From what I understand of the period in which this was made, it is unlikely to be made of steel, but I will put both steel and iron in the material section. I do this, in the hopes that it will actually assist someone in the future, and not contribute any more problems than this lobster-drawn dog sled of an application already facilitates. Picture available in register, and also on index card |
Provenance |
One of the more intact two-handed tools in the collection. The metal head and handle are both intact, but they no longer seem to attach. This adz was likely used by shipwrights. - 'Wood, Tools and Skills' by Mark Franke |
