Description |
Gun cleaner pull through. Brass tube with length of cord attached. |
Provenance |
This artefact was an important piece of a soldier's kit during wartime. Called a pull through, it simply is a brass weight with a length of cord attached to it. A pull through is one part of a rifle cleaning kit, used to maintain rifle efficiency in the field. Keeping your rifle clean was of paramount importance because the firing mechanisms of bolt action rifles are highly susceptible to dirt which could leave a rifle completely ineffective. To keep it handy at all times, the pull through was stored in a purpose built compartment in the butt of the rifle. This pull through was possibly used with a .303 calibre Lee Enfield rifle, a commonly issued rifle for the British and Commonwealth forces during both world wars. Because it is made of brass it indicates that it was probably issued prior to the introduction of the steel weighted pull through common during WWII. |
