Provenance |
The Strawberry Festival began in 1946 as a way of raising funds for the Mission hospital after the Second World War. Mission was once dubbed the "Strawberry Capital of the World" and one of the festival's other purposes was to keep this affiliation with strawberries alive. It had many events and a competition for both Strawberry King and Queen. The festival was first held on Main Street (now First Avenue) and was declared a holiday so that volunteer participation and good attendance could be assured. In order to give more space to the Soapbox Derby it was moved from Main Street to Mission's Fairgrounds where the Leisure Centre now stands. These are two Strawberry Festival pins. One is made of salt dough with the word "Mission" carved into it, and the other of plaster and metal with the leaves of the strawberry forming a crown; a literal Strawberry King. |
